Who are we?

Starting Over began over 20 years ago and is a non-profit organization serving Douglas County and surrounding communities by providing facilities and volunteers who serve as supervisors during parent-child visitations. Before the Starting Over program, these visitations took place in small, state facilities. In contrast, the campus of St. Julian’s provides a comfortable, relaxed environment with impartial, caring supervisors. Despite the often-tragic circumstances these children face, one constant remains: the children still love their parents. Starting Over gives these parents just what its name implies – a chance to start over. It began with one parent and one child and evolved into a ministry that has served more than 2,000 children and 1,300 non-custodial parents and family members. The need for supervised visitation continues to grow today as the number of children in the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) system continues to grow and more families are ruptured due the current addiction crisis in our country.

Starting Over receives referrals from DFCS and local judicial systems. Most families reside in Douglas, Paulding and Carroll counties; we are sometimes the central location for families traveling over seventy miles. The children we serve range from one month to 17 years old.

Our Mission

To provide a welcoming and safe space for children to have supervised visitation with non-custodial parents at no cost to the parents or children and without judgement regarding the circumstances that precipitated the family’s separation.  Starting Over is a healing reconciling ministry of St. Julian’s Episcopal Church.
